Hassle-free Rental Car Travel in Australia - FAQs
Below are answers to Frequently Asked Questions regarding Rental Car travel in Australia along with links to pages with even more information.
This will help you avoid unnecessary problems, save money and enjoy your travel in Australia.
1. What do we need to know about toll roads and paying tolls? What are E-Tags?
There are toll roads in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, mostly in the major cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The tolls range from a low of about $1.50 to around $7.00.
E-Tags are electronic 'tags' that attach to the interior of the wind screen. They automatically record the car’s passing, allowing you to pass through without stopping to pay. Some toll roads do not provide any way to pay cash. This means that, if you do not have an E-tag, you would have to pay by telephone using a credit card later, which also costs more because it attracts extra charges. An E-Tag is essential for reducing your costs and the likelihood of penalties or extra charges for driving on Sydney's multitude of Toll-roads.
Bayswater Car Rental provides optional E-tags for all our Sydney cars at only $1/day, making your travel easier and more trouble-free. (They also work on Brisbane and Melbourne Toll-roads.)
On return, we simply charge you for the Tolls accumulated during your rental.
While the E-Tag is optional, we highly recommend that you use one for travel around Sydney. The costs of incurring toll charges without having the E-tag in your hire car can add up quite quickly. Because of the high administration costs of managing electronic tolls that have been incurred without E-Tags, we charge $20 per toll for cars that do not have the E-Tag.

3. What should we do if we have a breakdown or problems with the car?
All cars are covered Australia-wide by Toyota New Car Warranty. This entitles our cars to free warranty repairs at any Toyota Dealership. Additionally, all our cars have 24 hour NRMA or RACWA Roadside Service Membership. (Call-out fees are charged for human error. i.e. lights-left-on & key lock out). Telephone and Membership details are on the car's key ring.
4. What do we need to know about traveling by automobile in Australia?
Below are a few tips. For more information, click here for our dedicated Automobile Travel in Australia page.
You’ll be driving the left side of the road. Look right just before entering traffic. (Just as importantly, when you are walking, look right before crossing the road. It may sound obvious, but habits of a lifetime are hard to break.)
Australia is a big, wide open country. Sometimes visitors expect things to be closer than they actually are. If you plan ahead, you’ll have time to enjoy the journey rather than getting caught trying to rush to your next destination.
Our speed limits are lower than some countries. You can still travel at reasonable speeds most of the time, but be aware that the speed limit can drop quite a lot and quickly as you approach towns and cities.
